Policy Agenda
Our priorities for Latino students and families in Kansas City, at the federal, Missouri and local levels.
01Educational Equity
Every Latino student deserves a high quality public education that sees their language, culture and potential as strengths.
Protect federal education protections and funding, including the Department of Education, Title I, Title III and IDEA.
Ensure multilingual learners get adequate funding, qualified interpreters and family communication in their language.
Remove barriers to special education with timely, bilingual evaluations and IEPs and 504 plans that carry over between schools, including through the RISE Act.
Fully fund all public schools, protect families’ access to public school choice, and require transparent, balanced budgets across traditional and charter schools.
02Community Power and Accountability
Latino families should help make the decisions that shape their children’s lives.
Hold school boards accountable for student outcomes, ethical conduct and respectful, culturally responsive governance.
Require real community input before city & county decisions that affect schools and neighborhoods.
Build Latino political power through bilingual civic and voter education that connects families’ priorities to the ballot and public policy.
Develop a pipeline of Latino candidates and public leaders through recruitment, mentorship and training, expanding Latino representation on school boards, city councils, county governments and in state and federal office.
03Family Well-Being
A student’s ability to thrive starts at home, with a healthy and stable family.
Defend Medicaid, including the school-based services that support students with disabilities.
Protect SNAP and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
Reinstate benefits available to refugees, asylees and trafficking survivors.
Expand mental health support for students and families.
04Safe Schools and Communities
Schools must be places to learn, not places of fear.
Shape Rep. Delia Ramirez’s Reimagining Safety Act. It would abolish ICE, replace the Department of Homeland Security with a Department of Community Safety, and invest in community violence intervention.
Keep immigration enforcement out of schools and other sensitive locations, require clear school protocols for responding to federal agents, and hold agencies accountable for enforcement on or near school grounds.
Protect students and families from gun violence through stronger gun safety laws, including universal background checks, secure firearm storage requirements and investment in community violence prevention.
Advance policies that create safe, inclusive school environments where every student belongs, with investments in mental health services, bullying prevention and supportive school practices that help students learn and thrive.
